I have my hands full with work this weekend on two freelance projects, so I thought I’d dash off a list post. Hence, a current list of people and things that are teh cool:

Between this and your last post I’ve discovered that we have very similar taste in music and TV. Ever seen Pushing Daisies?

cool is the $10 converse i found at the warehouse (crappy alternative to walmart)… not cool is the pruning I have to do in my packing. So far systematic theology is in… john piper is out… and i have 9 pairs of shoes allocated but I think I can probably just get rid of some of them.

@ Lauren: I keep meaning to watch that show! From what I’ve heard, it’s something I’d like. Especially since I love pie. But my current obsession is Veronica Mars. I can’t believe I missed out on that show while it was running. It’s a little like Buffy except without vampires. I am also watching Burn Notice on Hulu…love the spy tips.

@ Kate: nine pairs?? Let’s see…you’ll need one pair of good walking shoes, two pairs of cute outfit shoes (I would pick the Converse as one option depending on their color), maybe one pair of dressy shoes, and flip-flops. Because it just might be that warm in Kansas City when you’re here. Does that help any? :-)

Well, I’ve got the DVDs if you want to watch it. There’s only nine episodes on the first season – you could finish it before the second season starts in October. It’s the best show on television. Honestly, I think it’s one of the best shows that’s been on television for a long time. Everyone should watch it and everyone should love it. :-)

I, admittedly, loved Buffy back in the day so I’ll check out Veronica Mars soon. Burn Notice thoroughly entertained me for the first season. After so many episodes of the same basic plot format I got bored…

Looks like the official Pushing Daisies website has all of the episodes. Yay for online TV. That’s how I watch most of my TV now, since I’m usually in the prayer room or at jujitsu during primetime (our VCR [yes, VCR] doesn’t work).

I also keep hearing that Mad Men is super-awesome. I need to find out if the guys on the show wear fedoras, because I am a sucker for men wearing fedoras.

I suspect our taste in films may be similar as well. Are you dreading the movie version of Twilight as much as I am? :-\

Oh my goodness yes! I have only seen stills of (no trailers) and read about the movie but I think it’s going to be horrible. Short of everyone saying it’s the best thing ever I have no plans on watching it. Have you read the books? I’m interested to hear what you thought of those.

I know a couple of people who vouch for the super-awesomeness of Mad Men. As far as I can tell, though, it’s not online anywhere. I think I’m going to rent the first season. I’ll let you know if fedoras make an appearance.

I saw the trailer and tentatively poked around the website. Oh man. I’m just picturing all the shrieking fangirls who will be lining up to watch this movie…personally, I plan to stay home and maybe read War and Peace or something. I hear it’s good and I’ve never read it. :-P

I have read Twilight, the first vampire book, and was not impressed. I like vampires-trying-to-be-good stories as much as the next person. But this book…where do I start? The main characters and their relationship were the worst thing about it. The aforementioned fangirls love Edward the vampire because he’s gorgeous, protective of his girlfriend and mercurial in temperament. Personally, I found it a little weird how often Bella describes him as “god-like” in beauty. But what was most disturbing to me was that “protective” and “mercurial” translated as “stalker” and “volatile and easily angered.” The dude spies on the chick while she’s sleeping, gets mad at her at the drop of a hat, and patronizes her when she apologizes—yet she’s utterly devoted to him, willing to completely forsake her family and friends and make her life all about Edward. This has all the makings of a controlling, co-dependent, abusive relationship. I do not understand why such a relationship is getting such high praise from readers, and why many of the fangirls say they wish their boyfriend was more like Edward. Not to mention that Bella doesn’t really do anything in the book except sit around and be protected. I prefer to read female characters who have backbones, discernment, and a good right hook.

Twilight wasn’t badly written in terms of language and pacing, and the movie will probably have a few fun wire-fu fight scenes that I may look for on YouTube eventually. But if I want to watch a vampire with big hair trying to do good while dealing with centuries of angst and an unhealthy fixation on a mortal girl…then I’ll just return to the fount of vampirey goodness from Joss Whedon. David Boreanz is a lot nicer to look at than the movie kid and Buffy is way too snarky to put up with too much crap from him.

“fount of vampirey goodness from Joss Whedon” – laughed out loud as I read it. I’m going to have to quote you at some point.

@Jenn: Hmmm…that sounds a lot like the relationship in Dracula, except that the Count was completely obvious about it. Well, he also had no problems with being evil and planned to cause all kinds of trouble in London, but still, the nature of his relationship…
